The Many Layers of Speaking

The character 說 [shuō] serves as a vessel for communication, used to say, speak, explain, refer to, or discuss. Its earliest forms appear in the chu, qin, seal, and regular scripts. As a phono-semantic compound, it is built from the semantic component 言, meaning to say or speak, and the phonetic component 兌.

The phonetic component 兌 is composed of several elements, including 八 (eight), 㕣 (a marsh in between mountains), 口 (mouth), 儿 (standing person), and 人 (man or person). According to the Shuowen Jiezi, the character 說 means to explain and is composed of 言 and 兌, sometimes described as 談說.

Scholars have debated the deep origins of the word. One theory suggests the pronunciations belong to a word family derived from a reconstructed root *lo, meaning “to loosen” or “to relax.” Under this view, the word might be related to the reconstructed Proto-Sino-Tibetan *lot, meaning “free, release, slip, or dislocate,” which is also linked to 脫 (to peel off or escape). In this framework, one pronunciation is possibly derived from the causative devoicing of 悅 (to relax or be delighted).

However, an alternative derivation is offered by STEDT, who proposes a provisional Proto-Sino-Tibetan root *b-tsyat, meaning “to speak” or “say.” This theory connects the character to the Tibetan འཆད, meaning to say or explain. This connection is noted as being semantically more appealing, suggesting that the previous association with the concept of "release" might be a case of phonetic pigeonholing.

Beyond its primary function of speaking, the character also carries connections to emotion. The Moe Dictionary notes that 說 can be used to mean 喜悅 (joy or delight), as it is sometimes used interchangeably with 悅.
