The Evolution of 做: From Action to Being
A person performs a task, makes an object, or hosts a reception. In the Chinese language, these various actions of doing, producing, or becoming are captured by the character 做.
Historically, 做 originated as a vulgar variant of 作. This distinction arose because 作 had two different pronunciations: a departing-tone variant and a checked-tone variant. As Mandarin lost its checked codas, these two forms became homophonous. To maintain a distinction, the colloquial form 做 was used to represent the departing-tone version of the word.
The structure of the character involves several components. It contains the graphic component 亻, which is the side form of the person radical. It also incorporates the component 故, meaning old or of the past. Within 故, the element 古, meaning ancient times, serves as a phonetic component, while 攴, meaning to hit lightly or to tap, serves as the semantic component.
Over time, the writing of the character shifted. The component 乍 was later corrupted into 古. Today, 做 is used to describe performing work or activities, acting in a certain role, manufacturing goods, or holding and organizing events.
